November is National Family Caregivers Month

Posted on:   |   Caregiving

November is Global Caregivers Month where people are honored for their commitment and selflessness who provide for loved ones who are unable. The burden of caring for aging parents or the families of their partner with their job needs and the education of their own children is balanced by millions of Americans. NCM is an opportunity for gratitude and affirmation of the self-sacrifice and hard work of the caregivers – and support.

National Family Caregivers Month (NFC) is recognized every week in November. This celebration began in 1997 with the signing of a Presidential Proclamation by President Clinton. Ever since then, each November is dedicated to family caregivers.

Each year, the Caregiver Action Network chooses a theme for NFC.  The theme in 2019 is Caregiving in Crisis.  This initiative is to address the new realities family caregivers face with their loved ones during these uncertain times.

Those who care for a senior parent or loved one lose a considerable amount of time and even well-being for themselves. They undoubtedly experience a wide range of emotions on their caregiving journey. Most caregivers experience the positive side of emotions, such as love and appreciation.   However, there are several factors which affect the frequency of negative emotions, including the amount of time needed to dedicate to a loved one, if their loved one has any form of dementia, progressive illness, or the stress of anticipating the unknown  There are many challenges, such as lack of sleep, a lack of privacy and a lack of information that may lead to “caregiver burnout.’
