Preserving a Generation’s Greatness on Senior Citizen’s Day

August 21st is National Senior Citizen’s Day!

Originally established in 1988 by then-President Ronald Reagan, the day was created as a way to celebrate the unique perspective, wisdom, and accomplishments of the senior generations. While this sounds like a noble idea, many people struggle with the concept of how to celebrate the seniors in their life.

Here at Thrive USA Home Care Services, we have gathered a few great ideas for giving the individuals  you love a great day or paying homage to those you most respect:

Make a Memory That Will Last

One of the reasons for setting aside Senior Citizen’s Day in the first place was to recognize the value of the memories and wisdom that seniors share with younger generations. Capture that priceless wisdom and those beloved memories forever in a keepsake that you make together this August. Whether you create a cookbook or write a memoir, you will look back fondly at the things you collected for years to come. Looking to take a trip down memory lane? Go back through older photo albums and reflect on fun early memories.

Make it a Family Affair

Don’t be the only person in your family to celebrate Senior Citizen’s Day. Gather your relatives for a reunion or a family picnic, or go out to eat with your family to commemorate the day. You’ll be creating more memories for both your senior loved one and the rest of your family – and giving everyone from grandparents to grandchildren reasons to remember this special moment.

Pay Them a Visit

You might be surprised by the number of seniors who go without regular visits from friends and family, the number is actually over 50%! Whether it is distance, schedule conflicts, or other life circumstances that prevent visitors from dropping by, the resulting loneliness can be overwhelming for these seniors. Whether they live alone or in a care home, the simple act of dropping in to say hello to a senior you know – or even one you do not who is accepting visitors at a local nursing or retirement home – can make a major difference in their lives.
